Finding the Balance

Two important skills kids should learn:

1) How to follow instructions and adhere to social norms

2) How to take initiative and trust your own instincts

Traditional teaching emphasizes #1 while progressive methods promote #2. Both are valuable-- how can we teach a balance?

I run a school for gifted kids and I think about this a lot. But the method we use isn't particularly complicated. Throughout the day there are are 3 kinds of time: serious class time, chill class time, and free social time.

In serious classes (e.g. Science) students practice following explicit rules--listen without interrupting, only touch equipment when prompted, etc. In chill classes (e.g. Art) students still have to engage with the work, but there is more room for chatter, movement, and personal expression. In free time at breaks, the only rules are those of basic safety and decency. Students have wide freedom on what to do and how they want to do it, so they can experiment and observe the effects of their actions firsthand. The day is roughly 1/3 of each type of time.

What do you think? To me this is one of the most important questions of education and I still worry about it often. What techniques have you found to be effective on either side of this?
