Who are you and why did you start this school?
I’m Sebastian Predescu, a former public school gifted student and Canadian youth chess champion. I graduated from Harvard University with a degree in economics and math and went on to a successful corporate career in tech, but wanted to work on something more meaningful to people in my local community. I’ve always been passionate about education, and believe it to be a key part of the solution to almost every problem in the world today.
I began by working as a substitute teacher to see firsthand what’s happening in our classrooms, and it fired me up. I was borderline alarmed by what students were going through in public schools, and most private schools I worked in were just okay–I had expected a lot more for the cost of tuition. At the same time, I loved working with the students and was encouraged by their response. I was surprised and grateful when one classroom that I had visited just a single time weeks prior remembered me enthusiastically.
When I discovered microschooling, everything about it felt right. I had long thought small group homeschool-style environments would be great for students, and as a teacher I loved the freedom and autonomy of running the program. I now work with an amazing co-teacher for our K-2 class, as well as three excellent part-time TAs. Running a microschool is a lot more work than a corporate desk job, but I love being in the classroom and I can see every day the positive impact we have on our students.
